Shipping a Copart or IAAI Auction Vehicle to Hungary — What to Know Before You Bid

Copart and IAAI are the two most widely used US auto auction platforms for overseas buyers. Many vehicles imported to Hungary from the USA originate from one of these auctions. But the process is not the same as buying from a dealer — there are steps specific to auction vehicles worth understanding before you bid.

What to check before you bid

Title type

US vehicles carry different title designations: clean, salvage, rebuilt, flood, or parts only. A salvage or flood title does not prevent export from the USA, but it can affect your ability to register the vehicle in Hungary. If registration is your goal, check with a Hungarian customs broker or the relevant authority before purchasing a salvage title vehicle.

Vehicle condition and damage photos

Copart and IAAI listings include photos, but damage is often more extensive than the main images show. Review all available photos — engine bay, undercarriage, frame, and the damage area — not just the exterior shots. This applies especially to flood and fire damage vehicles.

Running vs non-running

Non-running vehicles can be shipped by container, but they require different pickup equipment (flatbed or winch loader) and cannot go on RoRo. Contact us before bidding on a non-running vehicle so we can confirm the pickup logistics in advance.

Storage fees after winning

After winning a bid, storage fees start accumulating at the auction yard — sometimes as soon as the next business day. Contact us immediately after winning so we can start the collection process and minimise storage costs.

Container vs RoRo for auction vehicles

RoRo requires the vehicle to be driveable, which rules it out for most auction purchases. Even for running auction vehicles, the additional protection from a sealed container is often worth the cost difference.
